The weekend was very productive. We got a lot of projects done and did some heavy duty cleaning, including emptying the fridge and scrubbing everything down.

We did the first major grocery run since the feast in Feb. Wow! We were even out of staples like flour.

My dye-dye-dye project yielded mixed results. The golden silk was lovely. The blue linen re-dye was okay, but didn't filll in the blotchiness of the first dye job (many years ago). I many have to do a lot of piecing if I want to use it :( A beige linen that I did with the blue batch 1) is not real linen and 2) turned out a serviceable gray. The yummy silk herringbone and a wool coating that I tried to dye Fire Red turned out hot pink. Grrr.  I tried overdying with chocolate brown to no effect. Sigh. I'll have to fix my dye vat now so that I can redye.

The new washer and drier came and they are faboolus! So quiet! Our clothes are so much cleaner! And, yes, I admit, moriven and I did watch the first wash cycle the whole way through. <3

I did get some sewing done, wich hopefully will result in garments tonight. I did decide to whip together some child-size tunics for the Esfenn silent auction at June Crown out of some scrap linen. I love the tiny clothes.

Brian and Marguerite came over for dinner Sunday. We determined that Noah, in mastering the D sound, is not trying to say "Da da da," but rather "die, die, die". It was so cute seeing his daddy coaching him to say "die, die, die" LOL

Fire red has a pinkish base. My newfound experience with procion reds is... they are either pink or orange. None of the procion colors will get as deep on wool and silk. If you want a deep color, use the jacquard acid dyes. They do require the water to stay very hot, so they need to be done on the stovetop instead of the washing machine (the water in the washing machine cools off too fast, so you end up with lighter shades.) I've also had good luck with Rit reds on wools.

I also found out at Dhama this weekend that it's the blue procion dye that shifts on wool and silk - blues or colors mixed with blue will shift. But turquiose, on the other hand, does not.

I can very much agree that my experiments show that procion Fire Red is pink based.

I would have preferred to use the acid dyes, but the timing was short and procion was what I had. Surprisingly (and unfortunately, in this case), the pink turned out very deep. I'm going to try to overdye it in a good brown and see what I get.

What direction do the blues color shift? Or, do they cause shifting in anything they are mixed with?

A s far as I know, they shift towards grey or green. I haven't worked with them in while, though, so don't quote me on that...

I'll be dyeing some wool forest green in the near future and tell you how it turns out.

At the risk of hijacking this post...

I do not understand how one dyes enough fabric for a dress on a stovetop. Any pointers?

I've never been successful at that, either - even with a canning pot that covers all four burners, 5 yards just doesn't move freely. I suppose one could dye in batches...

If you can't get it to change colors, I can actually wear hot pink. :-> :->

Also, I'm thinking about getting a new washer in the next month or so, so if you need to destroy one with color, let me know.

And I won't be at sewing tonight -- too much to do!!!!!!!!

Really? You'll let me dye your washer, too?

If I get a new one, sure! :-> But our refrigerator is dying, so it may not be right away...
