All it Takes is a Big Jerk
Feb. 8th, 2007 12:05 amOr that's what I think when it comes to things like this. The "big jerk" thing is from camp when I was a kid, but it came up because of the stuff moriven is doing on the car. Or, more precisely, what he wasn't doing, which was not moving a bolt in the middle of the engine. Somewhere in there... I'm sure he will tell you more, but it required removing a tire to get deep enough to play with it.
So he was trying to take off this bolt... he leaned on the socket wrench and nothing happened. He tried the new ratchet and compressor. Rated at 300 ft pounds, it should have no problem popping open a bolt rated at 160 foot pounds. Hah. Nothing.
I tried, with no result. Then, I propped up the wrench at the junction to the socket extender (yet another use for rattan) so that the force was only going in one direction. Still nothing.
Later, Moriven checked his car lists for folks who had a similar problem. One fellow said he had to put a 4' pipe on his wrench handle to get the leverage to crack loose this bolt. Hmm...
Monday I stopped by the Home Despot and found just such a pipe already cut to length (like it was meant to be. Aww...) Moriven put it on the wrench handle and tries it. Still no movement. I take the lever and he stands way back.... and sure enough, all it took was a big jerk. Well, maybe slow deliberate pressure, using all of my weight to my advantage, and no fear of the what might happen if the wrench blows before whatever is gumming up the bolt gives.
Mmm, physics... works every time.
